AI Automation of Junior Finance Roles Risks Talent Crisis
Artificial intelligence is automating entry-level finance tasks, prompting warnings that the loss of foundational training will deplete the pipeline for future Chief Financial Officers.
The automation of junior finance roles through artificial intelligence is shifting the industry's organizational structure from a traditional pyramid to a diamond-shaped model. By automating foundational tasks such as data entry and account reconciliation, companies are removing the entry-level experience traditionally used to develop future finance leaders.
Catherine Birkett, CFO of GoCardless, warns that this trend creates a talent crisis, as the next generation of finance directors and CFOs may lack the essential training provided by these roles. This shift is already evident in the United Kingdom, where PwC reduced its entry-level finance hiring by 200 staff last year. Christophe Catoir, President of Adecco, further cautions that such automation could create a barrier to social mobility for young professionals.
Conversely, Brian Spaans, CFO of Bunq, argues that AI allows graduates to engage in high-level analysis earlier in their careers. To adapt to this environment, Bunq has abandoned traditional CVs in favor of a seven-step AI and reasoning test. Other firms are similarly rewriting interview processes to prioritize AI analysis skills over manual Excel proficiency and implementing new mentorship strategies to ensure junior staff still understand the underlying mechanics of finance.
