China Requests Extradition of Journalist Bai Zhaodong from Thailand

The Government of China requested the extradition of journalist Bai Zhaodong from Thailand, prompting international rights groups to warn of potential political persecution.

The Government of China has formally requested that Thailand extradite investigative journalist Bai Zhaodong, who has been held at the Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Center in Bangkok since January 2026. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian alleges that Bai is suspected of extortion and accepting bribes as a non-state functionary. However, the United Nations refugee agency has recognized Bai as a refugee.

Rights organizations, including Reporters Without Borders and Safeguard Defenders, argue that the charges are reprisals for Bai's reporting on corruption and financial fraud involving Chinese Communist Party officials. These groups, along with Human Rights Watch and a UN independent expert, warn that Bai faces risks of torture, arbitrary detention, and enforced disappearance if returned to China. They note that Bai is one of at least four Chinese dissidents in the Bangkok facility facing possible deportation.

This diplomatic push coincides with a visit to China by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul between July 16 and 20, 2026, to meet with President Xi Jinping. Advocates claim Beijing is applying pressure on the Thai government to return the journalist during this summit, which would violate the international principle of non-refoulement.
