UK Grandparents Miss Out on £7,170 State Pension Benefit

Research from Confused.com reveals that grandparents providing regular childcare in the UK may be missing out on up to £7,170 in extra State Pension. This financial gap stems from a lack of awareness regarding the Specified Adult Childcare Credits scheme, which allows working parents or main carers to transfer unused National Insurance credits from Child Benefit claims to eligible family members caring for children under 12.

Managed by HM Revenue and Customs, the program targets individuals over 16 who have not yet reached State Pension age. These credits help fill gaps in National Insurance records, directly increasing retirement entitlements. Eligible claimants can backdate their applications to 2011. According to HMRC data for the 2023/24 period, there were 42,964 applications with an 80% approval rate, though overall take-up remains low.

The findings coincide with an increase in summer childcare expenses, with parents spending an average of £339 per child during the six-week holiday period. Tara Evans, Personal Finance Editor at Confused.com, noted that while grandparents provide enormous childcare support that saves families thousands of pounds annually, many remain unaware of this specific pension benefit.
