ECB to Decide on Rate Hike in December

Christine Lagarde announced the European Central Bank will analyze economic data to determine if borrowing costs should increase during its December meeting.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde announced that the bank will evaluate incoming economic data to determine "whether a hike is necessary" during its meeting on December 16-17. Speaking at the New Dialogues for the Future event in Milan, Lagarde warned that an energy shock could accelerate inflation and weaken growth, though she noted that artificial intelligence investments are supporting demand and economic resilience across the euro area.

This announcement follows an October 29 decision by the ECB Governing Council to maintain current borrowing costs. The bank kept the deposit facility rate at 2.50%, the main refinancing operations rate at 2.65%, and the marginal lending facility rate at 2.90%.

The ECB continues to pursue a data-dependent approach without committing to a specific path, aiming to stabilize inflation at 2% over the medium term.
