NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia Declines Re-election Bid
National Democratic Congress Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia will not seek re-election, sparking speculation about a potential 2028 presidential bid.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing a leadership transition after its National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, declined to seek re-election for his position. Mahdi Gibril, the party's Director of Elections and IT, confirmed that Asiedu Nketia did not pick up nomination forms before the established deadline.
Asiedu Nketia, a long-time strategist known as General Mosquito, has been a dominant figure in the party's leadership. His decision has led to speculation that he may instead pursue the NDC presidential primary ahead of the 2028 general elections, a possibility he has previously kept open.
The party recorded 137 prospective aspirants for 14 national executive positions. Those linked to the race for the chairmanship include former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong-Fosu, and Ambassador Alhaji Said Sinare. The NDC has not yet released a detailed timetable for electing a successor as it works to consolidate its structures to challenge the governing New Patriotic Party.
