Dutch Intelligence Warns of Smart Car Espionage Risks
The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service warned that smart vehicle features could be exploited by hostile states for remote espionage.
The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service warned that smart features in modern vehicles, such as microphones, cameras, and GPS trackers, could be exploited by hostile states for espionage. The agency stated it is technically possible to remotely activate these systems to eavesdrop on conversations or record surroundings.
This warning follows a surge in Chinese car imports to the United Kingdom, where brands including MG, BYD, and Jaecoo now represent 15% of new registrations. In response to similar security concerns, the UK Ministry of Defence banned vehicles containing Chinese parts from sensitive military sites, including the Special Boat Service headquarters and RAF Wyton.
While the Dutch agency did not name a specific country, UK members of parliament pointed to China's national intelligence law as a primary risk factor. The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in London rejected these accusations, describing them as "imaginary and purely fabricated."
