BNP Paribas Secures Regional Headquarters License in Saudi Arabia

BNP Paribas obtained a regional headquarters license in Saudi Arabia to expand operations and maintain eligibility for government contracts.

The French lender BNP Paribas has secured a regional headquarters license in Saudi Arabia, expanding its operational footprint in the kingdom. The license was granted following a meeting between BNP Paribas Chairman Jean Lemierre and Saudi Minister of Investment Fahad Al-Saif.

This expansion coincides with a visit to Paris by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, during which Saudi Arabia and France signed several agreements covering entertainment, logistics, and artificial intelligence. The move aligns with a broader Saudi strategy to establish Riyadh as a regional finance hub to compete with Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The licensing follows 2021 Saudi regulations designed to prevent economic leakage. These rules require foreign firms to maintain a regional base within the country, including at least 15 employees and executive staff, to remain eligible for government contracts.
