US Tech Giants Lose $5 Trillion Amid AI Spending Fears
Major US technology companies saw $5 trillion in market value vanish as investors questioned the sustainability of $700 billion in AI infrastructure investments.
Shares of major US technology companies plummeted in late October and early November 2026, wiping approximately $5 trillion off their combined market valuation. The sell-off followed third-quarter earnings reports from Alphabet Inc., Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, which revealed combined capital investments exceeding $700 billion this year for AI infrastructure.
Alphabet Inc. experienced its worst trading day in history, losing $500 billion in market value in a single session as shares fell 13%. The decline was driven by a negative free cash flow of $9 billion, missing analyst estimates of $2.7 billion, and reports that AI-assisted search summaries were cannibalizing advertising revenue. Despite a record 103% revenue increase in its cloud business to over $30 billion, the company maintained an annual capital expenditure forecast between $195 billion and $205 billion.
Other industry leaders faced similar pressures. Intel shares sank as much as 30% following a weak fourth-quarter revenue forecast linked to PC market weakness and manufacturing bottlenecks. Amazon missed third-quarter expectations after nearly doubling its AI-related spending, while Microsoft signaled continued heavy investment in data centers and chips. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that infrastructure spending would continue to be a headwind for free cash flow.
