Wall Street Professionals Pivot to Vertical AI Startups

Junior financiers are leaving traditional investment banking roles to join AI startups like Rogo and Hebbia to build automation tools for the financial sector.

A new career trajectory is emerging on Wall Street as junior financiers exit traditional investment banking and buy-side roles to join vertical AI startups. Companies such as Rogo and Hebbia are recruiting former bankers from top-tier firms including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Citi to develop AI agents capable of automating research, financial modeling, and the creation of slide decks.

Rogo has expanded its headcount to over 150 employees and reached a $2 billion valuation following a Series D funding round in April. The startup currently serves high-profile clients such as Lazard and Tiger Global. Hebbia has also seen a surge in interest, with monthly inbound applications tripling this year; approximately 60% of its workforce possesses a background in finance.

While traditional finance roles typically provide higher immediate cash compensation, these startups attract professionals through the promise of equity and the chance to lead technological transformation. Recruiters indicate that while a mass exodus is not occurring, there is a significant increase in finance professionals seeking to pivot into the AI sector.
