Cosco Shipping Net Income Jumps 81 Percent in Third Quarter

Cosco Shipping Holdings Co. reported a 17.2 billion yuan net income increase driven by geopolitical disruptions and surging container rates.

Cosco Shipping Holdings Co. reported a third-quarter net income of 17.2 billion yuan, or approximately 2.6 billion dollars, marking an 81 percent increase and the company's largest jump in two years. The growth was primarily driven by transpacific sailings and surging container rates.

These financial gains stem from persistent geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East, which forced vessels to reroute around Africa's Cape of Good Hope. This rerouting tied up ships for longer periods and stretched global supply chains, pushing spot rates for 40-foot containers toward two-year highs.

The strong performance of Cosco suggests a positive earnings season for global peers. Nippon Yusen KK has already raised its financial outlook beyond analyst expectations, while Evergreen Marine Corp. is expected to report its most profitable quarter since 2024. Other industry peers, including A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S and Hapag-Lloyd AG, are also seeing increased earnings estimates.
