David Jones Enters Voluntary Administration After Rent Dispute

David Jones entered voluntary administration and receivership on November 5 after failing to pay rent to Scentre Group and reporting a $95.5 million pre-tax loss.

The 188-year-old department store David Jones entered voluntary administration and receivership on November 5, 2026, following a breakdown in negotiations with its primary landlord, Scentre Group. The collapse was triggered by the retailer's failure to pay rent since September 30, placing it in breach of its lease agreements. Scentre Group CEO Elliott Rusanow stated that a "generous offer" to facilitate continued trading was rejected by the retailer's private equity owner, Anchorage Capital Partners.

The company reported a $95.5 million pre-tax loss for the year ending June 29, 2026, with sales falling by 8.7 percent. Financial instability was further evidenced by the company missing its October 30 deadline to file financial accounts with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. While lender Hilco Capital provided approximately $10 million in additional funding to secure Christmas stock, the retailer faced severe pressure from $153 million in finance costs and $125 million in lease costs.

McGrathNicol was appointed as voluntary administrator to seek recapitalization or a sale, while FTI Consulting was appointed as receiver to manage day-to-day operations. CEO Erica Berchtold stated the company has a plan to "reset the business for the future." The administration puts approximately 6,000 jobs at risk and may lead to the closure of more than half of its 38 stores across Australia and New Zealand, potentially reducing the footprint to between 12 and 20 locations. Some suppliers have already begun removing stock from stores to avoid losses.
