BBC Cuts 2,000 Jobs as Cash Reserves Hit Decade Low

The BBC is eliminating 2,000 jobs to save £500 million after its cash reserves fell 66% to £125 million.

The British Broadcasting Corporation is implementing a £500 million cost-saving plan that includes the elimination of up to 2,000 jobs. The move follows a sharp decline in public service cash reserves, which fell 66% over the last financial year from £369 million in 2025 to £125 million, the lowest level in a decade.

Director General Matt Brittin informed staff that the corporation has limited financial flexibility after recording a £121 million deficit, a figure that significantly exceeded the predicted £33 million. The financial crisis stems from a £1.3 billion real-terms loss in license fee value since 2017, coupled with rising production costs and intense competition from digital platforms such as Netflix and YouTube.

To stabilize operations, the broadcaster has drawn down its reserves to fund digital transformation and maintain content investment. Brittin is currently negotiating a new funding model with the government of the United Kingdom, which may involve extending the license fee to users of streaming services.
