Israeli Soldiers Mutiny at Sde Teiman Over Removed Unit Symbols

Dozens of soldiers from the Givati Brigade's Tzabar Battalion staged a rare act of mutiny on Thursday, walking out of the Sde Teiman military base in the Negev Desert without authorization. The protest followed a dispute in which command staff ordered the removal and destruction of battalion company insignias, flags, and memorial displays. Reports indicate one commander used a five-kilogram sledgehammer to destroy the symbols, which soldiers claimed represented their identity, heritage, and combat experiences in southern Lebanon and Gaza.

Battalion leadership justified the removal by stating the symbols were linked to irregular incidents involving the violence and humiliation of newer recruits. In response, soldiers reportedly laid down their weapons and shouted obscene slogans at officers, temporarily rendering the battalion combat ineffective. Some military sources described the event as the largest mutiny in the history of the Israeli army.

Commanders attempted to secure the soldiers' return via WhatsApp, threatening severe punishment for those who did not return by 4 p.m. While approximately 100 of the 115 soldiers eventually returned, others demanded to speak with leadership. The Israel Defense Forces is currently investigating the incident, stating that the conduct is inconsistent with military values and that those who led the walkout may face trial by the brigade commander.
