Home Office Faces Backlash Over Palestinian Refugee Scheme
The UK Home Office is accused of misleading Gazans after clarifying that its refugee resettlement scheme only applies to those already outside Palestine.
The Home Office is facing accusations from the alliance Communities for Palestinians that it provided false hope to people in Gaza regarding a reopened refugee resettlement scheme. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the program at the Labour Party conference, stating it would include Palestinian refugees fleeing war and persecution.
However, the International Refugee Assistance Project, which administers referrals, confirmed that eligibility is limited to a small number of urgent cases currently located in Jordan and Lebanon. This restriction means individuals remaining within the Gaza Strip cannot be rescued directly through this route.
The Home Office defended the policy by stating that international frameworks require individuals to be outside their country of origin to qualify for refugee status. While the government maintains the scheme was always intended for those outside Palestine, critics argue the initial announcement omitted this detail, leading many to believe the program offered a direct escape from Gaza.
