Tesla to Unveil Cybercab Robotaxi in Austin on September 3

Tesla will officially unveil its Cybercab robotaxi on September 3, 2026, at an exclusive event in Austin, Texas. The two-seat electric vehicle is designed for full autonomy, featuring no steering wheel or pedals and relying on the company's AI4 computer. Technical specifications indicate a front-wheel-drive motor generating 219 hp and a battery providing an urban range of 290 to 300 miles, with some estimates reaching 418 miles. The vehicle will utilize inductive wireless charging.

Initial commercial services will launch in Austin via Tesla's ride-hailing application, adding to existing rideshare operations that have run in the city since June 2025. While the company currently operates autonomous services in six cities across Texas and Florida, it recently received authorization to deploy up to 5,000 autonomous vehicles in the Las Vegas metropolitan area of Clark County, Nevada. Crowdsourced data suggests Tesla has already deployed at least 195 unsupervised robotaxis, with over 100 concentrated in Austin and more than 30 each in Dallas and Houston.

CEO Elon Musk has estimated a retail price of approximately $30,000 for the Cybercab, though he warned that the initial production ramp would be "agonizingly slow." Prediction markets have shown declining confidence in this price point, with the probability of a retail sale at or below $30,000 by the end of 2026 dropping from 33% in April to 17% in August. Despite these concerns, Tesla stock rose more than 5% on August 31 in anticipation of the launch event.
