Eight UK Airports Scrap 100ml Hand Luggage Liquid Limit

Eight airports across the United Kingdom have abolished the traditional 100ml restriction on liquids in hand luggage. Under the new policy, passengers may carry multiple containers totaling up to two litres of liquids through security. This transition was enabled by the installation of new CT scanners, which provide security personnel with detailed 3D images of bags.

Heathrow Airport and seven other hubs, including London Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Bournemouth, Edinburgh, Belfast City, and Belfast International, have adopted the increased limit. However, several other major sites continue to enforce the 100ml rule, including Manchester, London Luton, Liverpool, Cardiff, Newcastle, and East Midlands airports, though some of these locations no longer require liquids to be placed in clear plastic bags.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office defines liquids as drinks, semi-liquid foods, cosmetics, toiletries, sprays, pastes, gels, and contact lens solutions. Standard exemptions remain for medicines and baby food. Despite the higher volume allowance at adopting sites, passengers must still empty metal bottles, and liquids in vacuum flasks must be poured out because scanners cannot penetrate double-layer insulation.
