Royal Canadian Legion Celebrates 100th Anniversary in Ottawa
The Royal Canadian Legion marked its centennial on July 17, 2026, with ceremonies at the National War Memorial and the release of a commemorative Canada Post stamp.
The Royal Canadian Legion celebrated its 100th anniversary on July 17, 2026, with a series of events in Ottawa. The commemoration began at the National War Memorial, where Governor General Louise Arbour and Minister of Veterans Affairs Jill McKnight laid wreaths and poppies. The ceremony featured a youth-led torch procession and a Hercules aircraft flyover.
Later, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe officially proclaimed July 17, 2026, as Royal Canadian Legion Centenary Day in Ottawa during a reception at City Hall. As part of the celebrations, Canada Post released a commemorative stamp featuring the organization's banner and the dates 1926-2026.
Originally incorporated in July 1926 to provide financial aid and housing for First World War veterans, the organization has grown into Canada's largest veteran support network. It currently manages over 1,350 branches and approximately 300,000 members across Canada, the United States, and Europe. To mark the milestone, the Legion offered free membership, which attracted 100,000 new members in the first half of the year.
Supporters and leadership highlighted the organization's role as a community hub and its continued impact on veteran care. This includes providing funding for service dogs through provincial commands, as noted by Wounded Warriors Canada CEO Scott Maxwell.
