Indian Rupee Volatile Amid Oil Prices and RBI Policy Shifts

The Indian rupee fluctuated on July 21 as Reserve Bank of India interventions clashed with geopolitical tensions and rising crude oil costs.

The Indian rupee experienced significant volatility on July 21, 2026, initially slipping past 96.50 per dollar before recovering to 96.25 by noon. The currency's decline, which saw it lose nearly 2% in July and underperform other Asian oil-sensitive currencies, was driven by a rising oil import bill and geopolitical instability involving the United States, Iran, and a threatened Houthi naval blockade of Saudi Arabia.

Stability returned as Brent crude prices retreated to $88.3 per barrel on hopes of mediation in the U.S.-Iran conflict. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) supported the currency through market interventions and policy measures implemented last month to increase capital inflows. These efforts successfully attracted over $20 billion, primarily through non-resident Indian foreign currency deposits.

Despite these gains, internal divisions persist within the RBI regarding currency management. Governor Sanjay Malhotra and Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta advocate for a market-driven approach to conserve foreign exchange reserves, intervening only to curb extreme volatility. This contrasts with views from bank veterans who seek more aggressive interventions to deter speculative betting. This inconsistency has led some hedge fund managers to reinstate bearish positions on the rupee.
