Local AI Shift Triggers Global Token Price Collapse

The AI industry is shifting toward efficient local architectures, causing American market share to drop as low-cost Chinese models disrupt data center pricing.

The artificial intelligence industry is undergoing a transition termed the Great Migration, shifting from expensive, data-center-reliant large language models to efficient local AI architectures. This shift is driven by a factor of 10 improvement in performance and cost, enabling robust models to run directly on smartphones and PCs via local neural processing units.

PrismML and hardware providers like Qualcomm, Google, and Apple are leading this move toward edge computing. PrismML recently released a compressed version of the Qwen3.8 27B model designed for high-end smartphones, while new Snapdragon NPUs can now run 30 billion parameter models using only 3 gigabytes of memory.

This architectural shift has caused a significant market realignment. American AI labs, which previously controlled 70% of the market, have seen their share drop to 30%. This decline is fueled by Chinese open-weight models from Alibaba Group and Z.ai, which offer pricing roughly 90% lower than their American counterparts. While demand for AI intelligence continues to grow, the resulting volatility in token prices threatens to trigger a cascade of data-center halts and debt defaults, mirroring previous semiconductor market crashes.
