Nintendo Co., Ltd. Evaluates OLED Switch 2 Amid Component Price Hikes
Nintendo Co., Ltd. is considering an OLED version of the Switch 2 with Samsung Display while raising base console prices due to global component shortages.
Nintendo Co., Ltd. is evaluating the development of an OLED version of the Nintendo Switch 2 in potential collaboration with Samsung Display. According to reports from ZDNet Korea, the premium model would upgrade the current 1080p LCD screen to a Full HD OLED panel to provide improved contrast and richer colors. If the project is approved, development would begin by the end of 2026, with mass production targeted for late 2027 and a consumer launch in early 2028.
The company is weighing the financial viability of the upgrade as it manages rising manufacturing costs caused by global RAM and NAND memory chip shortages. These market conditions and an AI-driven component crisis have already forced Nintendo Co., Ltd. to implement price increases for the base Switch 2. A $50 price hike will take effect September 1, 2026, in the United States, Canada, and Europe, following a previous increase in Japan on May 26.
Separately, Nintendo Co., Ltd. is launching a redesigned Switch 2 in Europe this fall. This specific version features user-replaceable batteries to comply with European Union waste reduction legislation. President Shuntaro Furukawa has promised a robust software lineup to help offset the impact of the console's rising costs.
