Sony Launches QSSR AI Upscaling for Base PlayStation 5

Sony Interactive Entertainment released Quick Spectral Super Resolution to improve image quality and stability for base PlayStation 5 users via AI-guided upscaling.

Sony Interactive Entertainment launched Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026, introducing AI-guided upscaling to the base PlayStation 5 console. Developed under Project Amethyst in collaboration with AMD, the technology utilizes a streamlined neural network architecture to provide superior image detail and temporal stability compared to traditional temporal upscaling methods.

QSSR serves as a lightweight version of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) found on the PS5 Pro, designed to bring similar visual enhancements to a broader user base. The technology debuted through software patches for Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony is offering the QSSR library to all PlayStation developers to encourage adoption across more titles.

Insomniac Games' Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald stated that the tool brings a "great taste of the PS5 Pro experience" to base console players, specifically noting increased pixel-level clarity in environments like Madripoor and Shinjuku. Similarly, Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, noted that QSSR provides a level of temporal stability that was previously impossible on the PS5 console.
