Elon Musk Pledges Affordable Starlink Pricing Amid India Security Delays

Elon Musk pledged competitive pricing for Starlink in India as the government denies claims that domestic telecom giants are blocking the service's launch.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk pledged to make Starlink satellite internet pricing affordable for the Indian market to ensure competitiveness against domestic providers. The move comes as Starlink awaits final security clearances and spectrum assignment from the Indian government, despite already holding a satellite communications license.

Musk has accused Indian oligarchs and companies like Reliance Jio Platforms of maintaining a "monopolistic chokehold" to delay Starlink's entry. The Ministry of Communications rejected these allegations as "baseless and misconceived," stating that all satellite operators undergo identical security reviews. The dispute occurs as Reliance Jio Platforms prepares for a $106 billion initial public offering and continues to dominate the broadband market alongside Bharti Airtel.

Indian security officials have raised concerns regarding foreign-controlled networks, citing risks of service disruptions during national crises and the use of user data for AI training. The Department of Telecommunications now requires all Indian traffic to pass through domestic gateways and mandates compliance with geofencing and lawful interception. These concerns follow the seizure of smuggled Starlink hardware linked to narcotics trafficking and insurgencies in Punjab, Gujarat, and Manipur.
