Europeans Prioritize Air Conditioning Over Carbon Emission Cuts

YouGov found that a majority of respondents in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK favor the adoption of air conditioning over the prioritization of carbon emissions cuts. The polling follows four extreme heatwaves that caused thousands of deaths across Europe.

Between 61% and 73% of those surveyed support installing air conditioning as standard in all new homes, while 52% to 66% back government subsidies for installation. In every surveyed country except Italy, more respondents believe reducing heatwave harms through air conditioning should be prioritized over lowering CO2 emissions.

Cost remains the primary obstacle to adoption for 51% to 75% of people. While climate impact is a secondary concern for most, it is a more prominent issue for respondents in France. Additionally, 27% to 42% of respondents suggest governments should prioritize non-mechanical cooling methods, such as insulation and reflective roofs.
