New York Fed Survey Shows Rising Consumer Job Optimism

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports that U.S. consumers grew more optimistic about jobs and the stock market in July.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York released a survey on Friday indicating that U.S. consumers became more optimistic about inflation and the jobs market during July. The perceived probability of unemployed individuals finding a new job rose to 46.2%, marking the highest level recorded this year. These gains were most pronounced among lower-income households and individuals with a high school degree or less.

Consumer sentiment regarding the stock market also reached its highest level since April 2021, while one-year inflation expectations saw a slight decrease to 3.6%.

Despite these positive indicators, the survey highlighted emerging concerns. There was a broad-based increase in the belief that the overall unemployment rate will rise over the next year. Additionally, some lower-income households reported a higher likelihood of missing minimum debt payments.
