Asian Development Bank Raises Malaysia Growth Forecasts to 4.9 Percent
The Asian Development Bank increased Malaysia's 2026 economic growth forecast to 4.9 percent, citing semiconductor demand and data center investments.
The Asian Development Bank raised its economic growth forecasts for Malaysia to 4.9 percent for 2026 and 4.7 percent for 2027, increasing previous projections of 4.6 percent and 4.5 percent respectively. This upward revision is driven by a semiconductor upcycle and significant investments in data centers, specifically megacampus developments in Springhill, Serendah, and Johor.
Growth is further supported by public infrastructure projects, including the Penang light rail transit and the Kerian water project in Perak. Tourism initiatives and an upcoming Formula One event in Sepang also contribute to the positive outlook. The bank expects inflation to remain steady at 2.0 percent through 2027.
Despite the positive trend, the bank warns that growth may moderate. Potential risks include supply chain disruptions caused by conflicts in West Asia, output disruptions related to El Nino, and persistent pressures on energy and food costs.
