Liberal Party Nominates Flavio Bolsonaro for Brazil Presidency

The right-wing Liberal Party formally nominated Senator Flavio Bolsonaro as its candidate for the October 4 presidential election during a convention in Sao Paulo on July 26, 2026. The 45-year-old senator is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence under house arrest and remains barred from office until 2030.

Flavio Bolsonaro is challenging incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on a platform of tax cuts and harsher criminal penalties. While he presents himself as a more moderate version of his father, he warns that a Lula victory could lead Brazil toward a dictatorship. A Datafolha poll currently shows Lula leading Flavio 48% to 43% in a potential runoff.

The candidacy has gained international support from Argentine President Javier Milei and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, the campaign faces internal and external hurdles, including a lack of centrist alliances, personal scandals involving a film financing investigation, and a public feud with stepmother Michelle Bolsonaro. Additionally, the campaign has been impacted by tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

President Lula has attempted to link the campaign to U.S. tariff threats and terrorism designations. In response, the United States Department of State denied allegations that U.S. officials sought to undermine the Brazilian election. Other candidates in the race include Romeu Zema, Ronaldo Caiado, and Renan Santos.
