China Urges UN Security Council to De-escalate Ukraine Conflict
Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, called for restraint and a political settlement to the Ukraine conflict during a Security Council address.
Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, called for the immediate de-escalation of the Ukraine conflict during an address to the UN Security Council on July 10, 2026. He described the current trajectory of the war as concerning, noting that an increase in the intensity, scale, and scope of military attacks has resulted in significant infrastructure damage and civilian casualties.
Sun urged the conflicting parties to exercise restraint, abide by international humanitarian law, and resume dialogue to secure a comprehensive and binding peace agreement. He stated that parties have been caught in a "vicious circle of military confrontation and retaliation," which he argued fuels hatred and complicates the path to peace negotiations.
Representing the Government of China, Sun emphasized the necessity of addressing the root causes of the conflict and establishing a sustainable regional security architecture based on the UN Charter. The Chinese government maintained its impartial stance and expressed its commitment to working with the international community to advance a political solution to the crisis.
