Bomb Threats and Cyberattacks Disrupt European Infrastructure

Coordinated bomb threats targeting 25 flights and cyberattacks on refrigeration systems across Europe have triggered military escorts and security alerts.

A wave of coordinated disruptions targeted European aviation and infrastructure during the first week of November 2026. At least 25 commercial flights across Europe received hoax bomb threats, leading to emergency diversions and the deployment of military fighter jets. In France, Italy, Bulgaria, and Hungary, warplanes escorted passenger aircraft to safety, including flights operated by Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Finnair, and Wizz Air. No explosives were found during the security sweeps.

Georgi Peev, the Transport Minister of Bulgaria, urged passengers to remain calm, stating that air traffic controllers and the air force acted according to protocol. The aviation disruptions followed earlier incidents in the week, including a brief airport closure in Warsaw and a passenger evacuation in Spain.

Simultaneously, cyberattacks targeted refrigeration systems in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden, and France. These attacks compromised supermarket cold storage and the national blood service's facilities in France, with some thermostats remotely increased to 50C. Cybersecurity researchers noted that the hacks on Danfoss fridge controls bore hallmarks of Russian operations. Security agencies, including MI5, are monitoring these grey zone threats as part of a suspected hybrid warfare campaign intended to destabilize the region and disrupt support for Ukraine.
