Angie Nixon Wins Florida Democratic Senate Primary

Florida State Representative Angie Nixon won the Democratic U.S. Senate primary on August 19, 2026, defeating retired Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman. Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, secured approximately 56% of the vote despite a massive fundraising disadvantage; she raised under $1 million compared to Vindman's $16.3 million. Nixon campaigned on a progressive platform including Medicare for All, a $25 hourly minimum wage, and a national rent freeze.

Nixon will face Republican incumbent Senator Ashley Moody in the general election on November 3. Moody, appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis to replace Marco Rubio, won her primary with nearly 80% of the vote. Moody has characterized Nixon as a socialist who wants to "destroy this country," while Nixon has disavowed certain DSA planks, such as defunding the police, while maintaining her focus on healthcare and housing.

Following the result, President Donald Trump mocked Vindman as a "treasonous creep" and Nixon as a "radical left lunatic." Conversely, Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Nixon, calling her victory proof that organized people can defeat organized money. While Nixon expressed confidence in "whooping" Moody in November, election analysts at Sabato’s Crystal Ball upgraded the race from "likely Republican" to "safe Republican," viewing Nixon as a weaker general election candidate.
