Palm Beach County Rejects Beach Parking Fees for Residents

Palm Beach County commissioners unanimously voted to scrap a proposal that would have charged residents to park at 12 county-run beaches.

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to reject a proposal that would have introduced parking fees for residents at 12 county-run beaches. The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department had originally proposed a rate of at least $4 per hour to generate more than $7.5 million in annual revenue to offset budget reductions and fund programs such as swim lessons.

The proposal sparked significant public backlash, including a Change.org petition that grew from 1,700 to over 4,000 signatures. Opponents argued the fees would penalize seniors, veterans, and working families, hindering accessibility for residents across all income levels.

Following this opposition, Commissioner Maria G. Marino directed county staff to stop evaluating any plans that would charge residents for parking at county-owned beach parks. While the board ensured residents will maintain free access, officials are now exploring a system to charge non-residents to help cover facility maintenance costs. County Administrator Joe Abruzzo announced that the county will implement a free annual resident beach parking pass to ensure locals continue to access beaches without cost.
