Google DeepMind Staff Seek Unionization Amid Wrongful Dismissal Lawsuits

Employees at Google DeepMind's London office are pursuing unionization and legal action following disputes over the company's military AI contracts. Google has agreed to enter formal negotiations with the Communication Workers Union and Unite via the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service, though it declined requests for voluntary recognition to bargain on pay and hours. This push for unionization stems from staff demands to end contracts with the Israeli and U.S. militaries, restore a pledge against developing AI weapons, and establish independent ethics oversight.

Simultaneously, two former engineers have filed lawsuits alleging unfair dismissal for protesting Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud deal with the Israeli government. A Palestinian-heritage engineer at DeepMind filed a claim with a UK employment tribunal, alleging he was fired after distributing flyers and emails protesting the contract and Google's decision to drop a pledge against surveillance tools. Google DeepMind disputed the account, claiming the employee resigned.

In a separate action, a former cloud software engineer filed a lawsuit in California, alleging wrongful termination after disrupting an executive's keynote address to protest ties to Israel. Google maintains that the California termination was a response to behavioral misconduct. These events follow reports that Google technology is being deployed on classified U.S. military networks and claims from Israel's National Cyber Directorate that Project Nimbus has enabled combat victories.
