Climate Groups Demand Strict Renewable Rules for Australian Data Centres

Climate advocacy groups, including the Climate Council, Greenpeace, and the Australian Conservation Foundation, are demanding strict regulations to ensure Australia's expanding data centre sector is powered by new renewable energy projects. These groups argue that operators should not be permitted to rely on carbon offsets or credits to meet their obligations.

Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia, has announced plans requiring data centre operators to fund new energy projects, with national legislation expected in 2027. The push for regulation follows an artificial intelligence boom that has seen 90 new data centres planned to supplement the 162 already operating in the country.

These demands precede a virtual meeting of the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council to discuss sector energy obligations. Supporting the push for rules, a Climate Council survey found that 82% of Australians believe developers should pay for renewable energy and storage, while 67% fear the hubs could increase household power bills. The Australian Energy Market Commission is scheduled to issue advice on renewable energy regulations and grid connection technical standards in July.
