Canada Commits $100 Million to Nova Scotia Offshore Wind

The Government of Canada is investing $100 million to develop offshore wind energy in Nova Scotia to attract private investment for the Wind West project.

The Government of Canada committed $100 million on October 15, 2026, to advance offshore wind energy development in Nova Scotia. Announced in Halifax and Dartmouth by Energy Minister Tim Hodgson and Premier Tim Houston, the funding supports the Wind West initiative, which aims to license five gigawatts of energy by 2030 and could attract $60 billion in private investment.

Specific allocations include $5 million for floating light detection and ranging (FLiDAR) buoys to collect wind and ocean data, and nearly $3 million for Net Zero Atlantic to conduct marine surveys and transmission modeling for exporting power to Quebec, Ontario, and other regions. This data will prepare proponents for a Call for Bids to be launched by the Canada–Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator in winter 2027.

Premier Houston has proposed expanding the project's total capacity to 40 gigawatts, which could meet 27 percent of Canada's total electricity demand. While government officials described the move as a generational economic opportunity, the announcement follows criticism from Clean Energy Canada, which argued the federal government has prioritized natural gas over renewables in its national electricity strategy.
