Indian Bonds Rise After US Democratic Midterm Victory
Indian government bonds rose for a fourth session as a US Democratic midterm victory lowered oil prices and US Treasury yields.
Indian government bonds rose for a fourth consecutive session following a decisive midterm election victory by the Democratic Party in the United States. The election result triggered a decline in Brent crude oil prices, which fell to $94 a barrel from a peak of nearly $120, and a drop in the 10-year US Treasury yield to 4.84%.
Investors anticipate that the Democratic victory may reduce the risk of disruptive policy outcomes and potentially lead to a resolution of the war with Iran, which would ease inflation concerns for India. Consequently, the benchmark 6.94% 2036 Indian bond yield fell 6 basis points to 7.1258%.
Market participants are now awaiting upcoming inflation data to determine the future rate outlook for the Reserve Bank of India. The central bank previously raised rates by 25 basis points in October, and its next moves depend on the trajectory of inflation and geopolitical risks.
