Prime Minister Peter Magyar Nominates Andras Baka for President

Prime Minister Peter Magyar nominated former Supreme Court justice Andras Baka for the office of president. The move follows the removal of Tamas Sulyok, whom Magyar ousted over concerns that a loyalist to former Prime Minister Viktor Orban might obstruct legislation needed to unlock frozen European Union funding.

Baka previously served as Hungary's chief justice before Viktor Orban dismissed him in 2012. He is expected to be confirmed during a parliamentary vote on Tuesday. The nomination is part of a wider initiative by the current government to replace appointees from the previous administration.

The Tisza party, which nominated Baka, holds more than two-thirds of parliamentary seats following a landslide victory over the Fidesz party in April.
