Ohio Lawmakers Push Child Marriage Ban After Vinton County Case

A child endangerment case in Vinton County, Ohio, has renewed momentum for Senate Bill 341, which seeks to ban child marriage by raising the minimum legal marriage age to 18. The legislation was co-introduced by Bill Blessing and Bill DeMora. Under current Ohio law, 17-year-olds can marry partners up to four years older if they obtain approval from a juvenile court.

The legislative push follows a case where Elizabeth Siders, who married Gary Siders Jr. at age 15 in West Virginia, and three other adults face 16 felony counts of child endangerment after 16 children were discovered in poor living conditions in Vinton County. Bill DeMora cited this specific case as evidence that underage marriage can lead to dire consequences.

Although the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee passed the bill in June, it has not yet reached a full Senate vote. Lawmakers now intend to push the measure during the lame-duck session following the November election, possibly as part of an omnibus bill. Fraidy Reiss of the organization Unchained At Last has supported the effort, characterizing child marriage as a human rights abuse that creates legal traps and destroys the lives of girls.
