Greg Abel Shifts Berkshire Hathaway Toward AI and Tech
Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel is diversifying the conglomerate's portfolio by selling long-held stakes and investing heavily in Alphabet and AI-driven Bending Spoons.
Since becoming CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the start of 2026, Greg Abel has shifted the conglomerate's investment strategy away from several long-held positions. In the first quarter of the year, Abel oversaw the sale of stakes in Visa, Mastercard, and Amazon, signaling a departure from the stewardship of previous leadership.
Abel has aggressively expanded the company's technology footprint, particularly in AI-driven assets. Alphabet has become a central pillar of the portfolio, now the third-largest holding valued at nearly $37 billion. Apple remains the largest trade at $78 billion. Other major holdings include Occidental Petroleum at $16 billion and Delta Air Lines at $4.5 billion. In the residential sector, the company maintains positions in Lennar, Clayton Homes, and the recently acquired Taylor Morrison.
Most recently, Abel authorized a $330 million private placement for 10 million shares of Bending Spoons at $33 per share, as disclosed in an October 14 SEC filing. This follows a $600 million investment during the Italian company's July initial public offering, bringing Berkshire Hathaway's total stake in the AI-powered acquisition platform to 4%. Bending Spoons uses software to optimize platforms such as AOL, Vimeo, and WeTransfer.
