Nigerian Police Disperse Democracy Day Protests Across Multiple Cities

Nigerian security forces used teargas to disperse protests against economic hardship and insecurity in Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo, leading to the collapse of activist Omoyele Sowore.

Nationwide demonstrations erupted on June 12, 2026, to mark Nigeria's Democracy Day, with citizens demanding an end to economic hardship and worsening insecurity. In Abuja, Omoyele Sowore, a presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, led protests that were met with police force. Security operatives deployed teargas at close range, causing Sowore to collapse and struggle for breath; Amnesty International later reported that he was hospitalized following the attack.

In Lagos, hundreds of protesters gathered at the Ikeja underbridge for the #EndBadGovernance movement. The event turned tense when a pro-government group, Team Nigeria, staged a counter-rally in support of President Bola Tinubu, necessitating intervention by the Lagos State Police Command. Meanwhile, in Osogbo, a coalition of 12 civil society organizations marched to demand the reversal of anti-people economic policies and accountability for national defense spending.

A central theme across all protests was the failure of the government to rescue abducted schoolchildren and teachers, specifically those kidnapped in May from the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and the Mussa community in Borno State. Governor Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde confirmed that one teacher from the Oyo abductions had been killed. Additional unrest occurred in Ibadan on June 11, where protesters disrupted a town hall meeting on insecurity organized by News Central Television, and in Abuja, where actor Emeka Ike joined a "Tinubu Must Go" demonstration to appeal for an end to banditry on national highways.
