BJP Leaders Demand Sedition Charges Against Farooq Abdullah
Farooq Abdullah sparked controversy by crediting Pakistan for protecting Kashmiris, prompting the Bharatiya Janata Party to demand his arrest for seditious and anti-national remarks.
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah sparked a political firestorm during a workers' convention in Baramulla after questioning the Indian government's intentions toward Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah claimed that Pakistan's diplomatic efforts to raise the Kashmir issue at international forums have protected the region by maintaining global attention. He asked if Kashmiris could expect justice from New Delhi and accused the central government of failing to honor promises to restore statehood.
While Abdullah affirmed that the region acceded to the India of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, he urged residents to show courage to avoid being erased. He characterized Pakistan's international pressure as a necessary force that has saved the region from being ignored.
The Bharatiya Janata Party condemned the remarks as seditious and anti-national. Jammu and Kashmir BJP President Sat Sharma demanded an apology, suggesting that Pakistan would be a more suitable place for Abdullah to settle. Spokesperson Altaf Thakur and MLA Yudhvir Sethi called for police action and sedition charges, arguing that Pakistan has brought only terrorism and bloodshed to the region. BJP leaders defended the central government, asserting that the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A has fostered economic development, improved connectivity, and strengthened security in Jammu and Kashmir.
