Bristol Airport Increases Renewable Energy Output by 20 Percent

Bristol Airport increased its renewable energy generation by 20 percent in 2026 to support its goal of net zero operations by 2030.

Bristol Airport increased its renewable energy generation by 20 percent in 2026, with its solar arrays producing over 1.7 million kWh of energy. This output, which equals the annual power needs of roughly 680 homes, supports runway lighting, terminal equipment, and electric buses.

The airport is pursuing a goal to achieve net zero operations by 2030, with an interim target to reduce carbon emissions by 73 percent by 2027. To support this strategy, the operator will launch a £10 million energy centre later this year using air source heat pumps to eliminate gas heating from the terminal.

Sustainability Director Clare Hennessey stated that the increase in on-site renewable energy means less power is required from the national grid. Beyond solar energy, the airport is funding research into low-height wind turbines to avoid radar interference and collaborating with the aerospace sector to develop zero-emissions flight.
