United States and India Near Final Bilateral Trade Agreement
The United States and India are finalizing a bilateral trade agreement that officials say is over 90 percent complete to resolve long-standing economic frictions.
The United States Department of State and the Indian government are nearing the completion of a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) designed to resolve long-standing trade frictions and elevate economic relations. A senior US State Department official reported that the deal is over 90 percent complete, noting that the final details are currently being worked out.
Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described the pact as nearly done and dusted. However, Goyal indicated that final execution depends on India securing a competitive advantage over its rivals within the American market. The two nations have been working toward this goal since establishing an interim framework for the deal in February 2026.
The U.S.-India Business Council has urged both governments to finalize the agreement to lower tariffs and trade barriers. This push follows a year of record investments between the two nations throughout 2026, with business leaders seeking greater certainty for the economic partnership.
