MapQuest Launches Feature to Identify License Plate Readers

MapQuest released a surveillance layer for its app that allows users to locate automated license plate readers along their travel routes.

MapQuest launched a new mobile app feature on Thursday that enables users to activate a surveillance layer to identify automated license plate readers (ALPRs) along their routes. The tool flags cameras from several providers, including Flock Safety, Axon Enterprise, Motorola Solutions, and PlateSmart, which use machine learning to convert vehicle details into searchable data for retail security and law enforcement.

The release follows increasing privacy concerns regarding how this data is stored and shared. Flock Safety has attempted to address these criticisms by reducing its data retention period from 30 days to seven and stating that its systems do not utilize facial recognition.

Some municipalities have already taken action against the technology. In August, Tempe, Arizona, shut down its Flock Safety camera network. Mayor Corey Woods ordered the removal of the devices, stating that while the cameras helped police, the risk of misuse was too great to maintain community trust.
