Saskatchewan NDP Slams Throne Speech as Out of Touch

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck and labor leaders condemned the governing party's Throne Speech for failing to address healthcare, education, and homelessness.

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck and opposition critics condemned the Saskatchewan Party government's latest Speech from the Throne, claiming it offered no new ideas to address homelessness, crowded classrooms, or the shortage of family doctors. Beck characterized the government as "entitled, arrogant, and out of touch," citing high rates of child poverty and economic insecurity alongside growing provincial debt.

The NDP specifically criticized the government's plan to proceed with an AI data centre in Sherwood without sufficient consultation. While the government introduced The Safer Homes for Seniors Act to improve personal care home oversight and the Mandatory Testing and Disclosure Act to protect crime victims and first responders from disease, critics remained unimpressed. Meara Conway noted that health care pledges mirrored wording from as far back as 2007.

Labor representatives also rejected the government's agenda. Samantha Becotte of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation stated the speech contained nothing new for education, while Lisa Zunti of SEIU-West argued the speech ignored the needs of health-care workers awaiting contracts.
