Bangladesh Marks 51st Anniversary of National Revolution Day

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh government lead nationwide commemorations marking the 51st anniversary of the 1975 soldiers' uprising.

Bangladesh observed National Revolution and Solidarity Day on November 7, 2026, commemorating the 51st anniversary of the 1975 uprising. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who also serves as the chairman of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, attended a Gram Police rally at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka and laid wreaths at the graves of his parents, former president Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the government organized a seven-day series of events from November 5 to 11 to mark the occasion. The holiday honors the November 7, 1975, revolt when a soldiers' uprising freed Major General Ziaur Rahman from house arrest and resulted in the death of Major General Khaled Mosharraf.

The 1975 events followed the August 15 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family, which had placed Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad in the presidency. The subsequent revolt, supported by thousands of civilians, restored Ziaur Rahman to command. This shift is credited with establishing the ideology of Bangladeshi nationalism and creating the foundation for multiparty democracy and freedom of the press in the country.
