Netherlands and Ireland Boycott 2027 Eurovision Song Contest

The Nederlandse Publieke Omroep announced the Netherlands will boycott the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest over Israel's participation amid military operations in Gaza.

The Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO) announced on October 27, 2026, that the Netherlands will boycott the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. The decision follows a period of inconsistency where the broadcaster AVROTROS initially pulled out in August, only for the NPO to pledge a return before ultimately reversing course. NPO officials cited societal division and sensitivities regarding Israel's participation in the event amid military operations in Gaza.

While the Netherlands will not field a contestant, the NPO confirmed the contest will still be broadcast on public television via NOS. Ireland has also confirmed its boycott for similar humanitarian reasons, and the Czech Republic has withdrawn citing budget cuts. Spain and Slovenia have until December to decide on their participation, while Iceland's public broadcaster RÚV indicated a return is unlikely.

The European Broadcasting Union later announced that 36 countries will compete in the 71st contest, scheduled for May 11, 13, and 15, 2027, in Burgas, Bulgaria. The event follows Bulgaria's first victory in Vienna. The 2027 lineup will include the debut of Canada and the return of North Macedonia. Martin Green, the contest director, expressed regret over the Dutch withdrawal but stated he respects the strength of feeling behind the decision.
