Vineyard Wind and GE Vernova Settle $4.5 Billion Dispute

Vineyard Wind and GE Vernova reached a confidential settlement on September 16, 2026, resolving a legal conflict over the $4.5 billion Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind project. Under the terms of the agreement, GE Vernova withdrew its notice of termination and both parties dismissed all outstanding legal claims.

The dispute began in February 2026 after GE Vernova sought to exit its turbine construction and maintenance contracts, claiming it was owed between $300 million and $360 million in unpaid bills. Vineyard Wind countered that GE Vernova owed over $850 million due to project delays and a 2024 turbine blade failure that scattered debris on Nantucket beaches, which the developer attributed to manufacturing flaws.

Vineyard Wind successfully obtained a court injunction from Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Peter Krupp to prevent GE Vernova from exiting the project. The developer argued that the manufacturer's proprietary technology was essential to the project's commercial viability and that a termination would jeopardize financing. With the settlement, the 800-megawatt project, consisting of 62 turbines, is now fully capable of producing electricity for more than 400,000 homes and businesses.
