Residents Sue Microsoft Over Noise from Wisconsin AI Data Center

Residents of Sturtevant and Mount Pleasant filed a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft alleging excessive noise pollution from the Fairwater AI data center.

Residents of Sturtevant and Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, filed a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft Corporation on July 1, 2026, alleging that the Fairwater AI data center emits unreasonable and excessive noise. The plaintiffs claim that diesel generators and HVAC systems produce a pervasive low-frequency hum and infrasound, which one resident compared to the whirring engine of a freight train. These disturbances allegedly disrupt sleep and diminish property values through private nuisance and negligence.

In a June 18 blog update, Microsoft stated that its engineering teams identified high-speed cooling fans as the noise source and implemented mitigations in April that fully resolved the issue. The company maintains that noise levels comply with local ordinances and plans to install further sound reduction components. However, the lawsuit argues that Microsoft failed to implement adequate acoustic barriers. Additionally, some residents have complained of light pollution and a dust bowl effect caused by the construction of the facility.

Mount Pleasant village leadership has remained supportive of the $7.3 billion campus, describing it as a historic milestone for the region. The village communications director stated that officials have received no noise complaints since the April modifications. The dispute comes as Microsoft intends to build up to 15 data centers in the area, contributing to a broader conflict over the expansion of resource-intensive AI infrastructure in residential zones.
