Mastercard Buys BVNK and Visa Acquires BioCatch

Mastercard acquired blockchain firm BVNK for $1.8 billion while Visa agreed to buy fraud detection company BioCatch for $2.4 billion.

Mastercard Incorporated completed the $1.8 billion acquisition of blockchain technology firm BVNK on August 3, 2026. The move integrates stablecoins and tokenized assets into the global card network to scale use in treasury flows, remittances, and cross-border B2B payments.

Chief Product Officer Jorn Lambert described the acquisition as a strategy for a "multi-money world" where digital and fiat currencies coexist. The integration allows for the movement and conversion of value across these different currency types.

On the same day, Visa Inc. entered a definitive agreement to acquire BioCatch, an AI-driven fraud detection firm, for $2.4 billion in cash. Visa Inc. intends to use the acquisition to enhance its behavioral biometrics capabilities.

These simultaneous transactions highlight diverging strategic priorities between the two payment giants. While Mastercard Incorporated is investing in blockchain infrastructure, Visa Inc. is prioritizing AI-driven security to combat fraud.
