Verizon and Ericsson Complete First 6G Field Call
Verizon and Ericsson conducted the first pre-standard 6G field call in California to test signal performance and inform future global connectivity standards.
Verizon and Ericsson completed the first pre-standard 6G field call in the 7 GHz band at a commercial network site in Concord, California. Using an Ericsson proof-of-concept kit and a 400 MHz carrier, the test moved 6G technology from laboratory integration into a real-world environment.
The technical setup utilized a base station in a site shelter and user equipment in a mobile enclosure. This allowed the companies to evaluate signal performance across various conditions, including line-of-sight, foliage, and indoor penetration through different building materials. While the primary confirmed result was a successful outdoor call, the broader project continues to evaluate stability, latency, and throughput.
Both companies stated that the milestone is a technical demonstration intended to inform future research and global standards rather than a commercial service launch. The collaboration aims to generate technical insights necessary for the design and deployment of future 6G networks.
