Tesla Aims to Sell Cybercab Robotaxis by Late 2026
Tesla plans to sell its steering-wheel-less Cybercab robotaxis by the end of 2026 while facing a federal safety probe over the lack of manual controls.
Tesla aims to begin selling its Cybercab robotaxis to the public by the end of 2026. The gold, two-seater vehicles lack steering wheels, pedals, and mirrors, serving as a centerpiece of CEO Elon Musk's strategy to transition the company into an AI and robotics firm.
The company has already deployed a fleet of over 300 Cybercabs in Austin, Texas, and plans to expand the service to Dallas next month. While AI head Ashok Elluswamy stated that scaling manufacturing would not be a significant challenge, the rollout faces regulatory hurdles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation to determine if the vehicles comply with federal safety regulations, which typically require manual controls. Although the agency has proposed updating these standards for autonomous vehicles, existing rules remain in force. Tesla must respond to the probe by October 30.
